I can grow up to one and a half metres in length and have
four strong, paddle-like flippers for movement in the water. I am Australia's
Loggerhead Turtle. I can weigh up to 100 to 150kg, although I had a friend who
weighed 400kg. I feed mostly on shellfish, crabs, sea urchins, jellyfish and
various other fish. I like searching coral reefs, rocky places and old boat
wrecks for food. My characteristic beak-like mouth is used to shear or crush
food. Here are some interesting facts about myself I thought you might
like to know:
Scientists call me: Caretta
caretta
Real size ranges from:
950mm-1200mm
I usually live: subtidal and intertidal
coral and rocky reefs and seagrass meadows as well as deeper soft-bottomed
habitats of the continental shelf
Breeding: usually
happens in shallow waters where I was born. We girls like to go back to where
we were born. We also like to take on a few partners, just to make sure. We can
lay up to 120 "ping pong" sized eggs. |
