Overview of Drip Watering

As the name implies, Drip Watering is a method of applying water to plants slowly, by a dripping or trickling action.

This is accomplished by a small device known as a Drip Emitter, attached to a Polytube feeder line.
Slow drip watering
It is particularly effective in hot dry climates where spraying water results in a lot of water loss through evaporation.

The drips are applied close to the ground in a confined area so the water enters the soil quickly and efficiently.

Although you will see only a small wet patch above the ground, if the soil is a good loamy type, the water will migrate sideways as well as down, to form an onion shaped wet patch below the ground.
Water diffuses below the ground.
Drip Watering is very effective for all container plants : -
  • pot plants
  • hanging baskets
  • window boxes
as well as in narrow garden beds.
Container plants do well with drip watering.
Another benefit of Drip Emitters is that they will operate off LOW water pressure.

That means you can connect them directly to a water tank. This is very convenient if you are not connected to a town water supply, or if you are using rain water or recycled water in your garden.

Alternatively, you can operate them from a low pressure pump (maximum pressure 100 KPa (15 psi))
Pot plants wayered with Drips
If you wish to operate them from a high pressure pump, or directly to a town or city water supply, always fit a Moss Pressure Regulator/Filter to the line before the Drip Emitters.

This will ensure that the pressure is reduced to 100 KPa (15 psi) and particles that might clog the Emitters will be filtered out.

Drip Emitters also work well in combination with Moss Slo-Flo Watering, which is more suited to larger plants or garden beds.
