How to Save Water in Your Garden |
|
Most plants take up water from the soil through their roots. From there it travels up through the trunk or stems, through the branches and out to the leaves where it evaporates into the air. The plant takes in vital minerals and nutrients with the water and uses it to grow. The other essential requirements are sunlight and carbon dioxide. So to be effective, the water must be placed within the root zone of the plant, which for most plants spreads out about the same distance as the leaves. Water placed outside this distance is largely wasted. |

The Moss Aquasmart system is one of the best ways to achieve accurater water placement. The moisure sensor is placed right in the root zone. When dry, the sensor emits a steady drip of water exactly where its needed until the soil or potting mix is sufficiently moist. Then it turns itself off automatically. Its inexpensive, easily installed and minimises water use. See: Aquasmart. |

Another accurate ways to place water in the rootzone is by using Moss Slo-Flo tubing. By forming it into a ring placed around the plant, water slowly drips right above the roots. |

This is ideal for shrubs, bushes and small trees as well as container plants such as pot plants, hanging baskets and window boxes. Use the smaller 5mm diameter Slo-Flo for plants in containers, and the larger 13mm Slo-Flo in garden beds and around shrubs and small trees. |

For small garden beds which contain flowers and a multitude of small plants intertwined and overlapping, Moss Microsprays are often a better solution. You can place them right next to the plants and direct a fine spray onto the root zone. There is a wide range of spray patterns to choose from such as full circle, half circle, and strip spray. The water flow and spray area can be accurately controlled with a micro tap in the feed line. The distance that the microspray reaches will depend on the type of spray pattern you choose, but is generally in the range of 0.5 metres to 2.0 metres. So, all up, you can ensure that the water goes exactly where you want it, and no further. |

For larger garden beds, or where you need to get the water spray over the top of plant foliage to reach the root zones, a Moss Spikespray system will do the job. By selecting the system that gives the most accurate water placement you can save many hundreds of litres per year. |
